Sallie Mae Bringing 700 Jobs to Muncie

Muncie, IN (February 13, 2006) - Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels today announced that Sallie Mae, the nation's leading student loan provider, plans to add 700 jobs in Indiana by opening a new operation in Muncie.  Sallie Mae CEO Tim Fitzpatrick, Muncie Mayor Dan Canan, President of the Delaware County of Commissioners Tom Bennington, Vision 2006 Economic Development Program, and other local officials joined Governor Mitch Daniels for the announcement at the future Sallie Mae facility, which is currently a shell structure that will be built out by state and local contractors and fully operational later this year.

"I've been talking to Sallie Mae and am delighted they chose Muncie as a place for this great new investment.  We showed them several options, and Muncie really stepped up," said Governor Daniels.

Mayor Canan and Sallie Mae CEO Tim Fitzpatrick today signed the letter of intent allowing the company to lease the Airpark facility in Muncie from the Delaware Advancement Corporation.  After an initial 10-year lease, Sallie Mae will purchase the 54,000-square foot building that was originally built in 1999.

"Today's job announcement is the largest here in 20 years and means that our high school and college graduates can choose a career with a Fortune 500 company right here in Muncie," said Mayor Canan.  "Muncie can compete in growing parts of the economy, and this new Sallie Mae operation proves it."

The new jobs in Muncie will bring Sallie Mae's total employment in Indiana to more than 3,000.  New positions at the facility will support several subsidiaries in Sallie Mae's debt management division.  The company anticipates filling up to 300 jobs in the first year of operation and an additional 200 jobs in each of the next two years, bringing the total at the facility to 700 by year end 2008.  General hiring will begin as early as August of this year.  As part of the community incentive package/company agreement, the average wage for employees with one year experience are guaranteed to be at least $31,200 (wages and bonus) exclusive for benefits. "Sallie Mae has an outstanding employee benefit package that will compliment with wages", noted Mayor Dan Canan.

"The outreach and effort from both the state of Indiana and this community were tremendous," said Fitzpatrick.  "Their hard work made Sallie Mae's decision to grow in Indiana an easy one."

The Muncie facility is likely to focus on student loan default prevention performed primarily by subsidiaries in Sallie Mae's debt management division.

Jobs at the Muncie operation will require a high school education, communication and analytical skills, high energy and a goal-oriented mind set.  Employees will earn performance-based pay and receive competitive benefits including health insurance, paid holidays and vacation, participation in a 401(k) and a stock purchase plan, and stock options.

Sallie Mae is listed on both the Fortune 500 and the Forbes 500. The company also has been recognized as one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens according to Business Ethics magazine, and one of the top 30 companies for executive women by the National Association of Female Executives.
